Teacher Service Commission (TSC) has now ordered Primary and JSS interns to renew their contracts. Through the county directors, the commission has began to renew the contracts which are due to expire at the end of this month. The disgruntled interns have been directed to visit their Subcounty offices with new Personal Accident Cover to facilitate the renewal process.,
"...advice your INTERN teachers both JSS and primary whose contract was ending 31/12/2023 to go for PERSONAL INSURANCE Cover for renewal of their contract. The should be for one year. Let them bring to the Subcounty office TSC by midday on 13/12/2023. Kindly please." read part of the the message sent to the interns in one of the counties.

The directive now leaves the interns at cross roads as they may potentially face joblessness if they defy the order or sign the renewal and bury their hopes of confirmation to Permanent and Pensionable terms. Contracts renewals have been conducted before but the fashion in which this one is being done raises eyebrows.
TSC normally communicates to its staff through circulars which are streamed from Directorates down the hierarchy but with this contract renewal, its being done in a very casual and deep silence. No circulars, no press conference, just road side orders. There can be a couple of explanations to this unprecedented move.
Either tsc wants to test the resolve of interns who are demanding confirmation or they are indeed hell bent with their idea to renew the contracts, the protests, notwithstanding. This page has also learnt that the calls to renew are not nationwide. Only a paltry number of subcounties are being used as litmus paper to get the reaction of the tutors. The commission is employing the classic divide and rule tactic to achieve their goals. They are aware a good number of interns will show up for renewal leaving the rest in a really bad place. It's understood that some who may remain steadfast in the quest for confirmation may deem themselves jobless or face little prospects of securing tsc employment in future.
Some interns have dismissed the widely shared notices as 'hot air'. They argue that the commission is not legally placed to renew their contracts which are still running. They also argue that the matter is still in court and until the court determines the case against renewal, tsc will have to take it slow.
The twists and turns continues. Keep it here for more developments...
